It’s free Slurpee day at 7-Eleven and there’s more to celebrate than not having to pay for the beloved summertime treat – it’s 43 percent bigger this year!
The largest convenience store chain in the nation is giving out 12-ounce Slurpees this year, a change from the 7.11-ounce Slurpees that have been given out for the past decade.
Laura Gordon, vice president of marketing and brand innovation, told USA Today, "Moms asked us for cups with lids. That means less mess in the car." The smaller version of the Slurpee didn’t come with a lid, so that’s why they made them bigger.
The brand’s spokesperson Margaret Chabris told NY Daily News of their 86th birthday, “We expect to give away 7 million cups in the U.S. and Canada.”
The Slurpees will be given out from 11am-7pm today. The chain has been promoting this day on Facebook since March and they’ve even been using social media tools such as Instagram and Twitter to market the occasion.
Customers are encouraged to post their own Slurpee dance to the Facebook page, tagging it @slurpee #slurpeedance.
