Star Wars creator George Lucas and Lincoln writer Tony Kushner are among the recipients of the National Medal of Arts. The honor will be presented by President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama on Wednesday.
According to The Los Angeles Times, the ceremony will take place in the East Room of the White House. Obama will also present the recipients of the National Humanities Medal to photographer Camilo Jose Vergara, theater artist Anna Deavere Smith and 10 others.
The recipient of the National Medal of Arts includes artist Ellsworth Kelly, who recently turned 90 and has his work on display at the Modern Museum of Art in NYC, and soprano Renee Fleming. Musician Allen Toussaint, landscape architect Laurie Olin, choreographer Joan Myers Brown, author Ernest Gaines, arts patron Lin Arison and musician Herb Alpert are the other recipients, notes BroadwayWorld.
Hollywood is represented by three Oscar nominees. Lucas, who won the Irving G. Thalberg Award in 1992, produced Red Tails in 2012 and sold Lucasfilm to Disney. Kushner earned an Oscar nomination for writing the adapted screenplay for Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln. Two-time Oscar nominated writer/actress Elaine May will also receive the award.
