Christopher Walken has been cast in director Clint Eastwood’s film adaptation of the hit musical Jersey Boys, which centers on Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.
The Oscar winning actor has been cast as Angelo “Gyp” DeCarlo, a New Jersey mobster who helps the singers keep out of organized crime, reports Deadline.
The news comes after Variety reported last week that Eastwood is interested in casting Broadway stars for the lead role instead of well-known Hollywood talent. John Lloyd Young, Erich Bergen and Michael Lomenda, as well as Boardwalk Empire’s Vincent Piazza have caught Eastwood’s eye, although he hasn’t made any offers yet.
Producer Graham King and Eastwood did get the greenlight from Warner Bros. to cast these actors in the lead roles ,according to Variety’s sources.
With the lead roles being taken up by virtual unknowns, actors like Walken will be important for the smaller roles to add some well-known faces for international audiences.
The WB/GK Films production is being produced by King and Rob Lorenz, with Valli and Bob Gaudio as executive producers. Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice wrote the script. Production will kick off in LA in September.
Walken recently appeared in Seven Psychopaths and A Late Quartet. He’s currently working on Gods Behaving Badly and The Boom Boom Room.
