Rupert Grint, the actor known around the world as Ron Weasley in the Harry Potter films, is heading to the stage in London. Grint has signed on to co-star with Skyfall’s Ben Whishaw in a West End revival of Mojo. This will mark Grint's stage debut.
Mojo was the first play by Jez Butterworth and won critical acclaim when it premiered in 1995. The story is set in 1950s Soho, with rival gangs fighting for control during the early days of Rock ‘n’ Roll. According to The Guardian, Downton Abbey’s Brendan Coyle and Daniel Mays will join Grint and Whishaw in the production.
TheWrap reports that Ian Rickson will direct, having performed the same duties on the original production. It will open on Oct. 26 at the Harold Pinter Theatre.
“I’d seen the Potter films with my daughter and always thought Rupert was truthful as Ron Weasley,” Rickson told The Daily Mail. “There’s something ordinary and centred about him, and in this world of Mojo you want that grittiness.”
After Harry Potter ended, Grint has appeared in films like The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman and GBCB. He had secured a role in the CBS pilot Super Clyde, but the network did not pick it up for the Fall 2013 TV season.
