Sebastien De La Cruz, who was a finalist on the 2012 season of America’s Got Talent has a stunning voice for a 10-year-old. He wowed the crowed before the San Antonio Spurs took on the Miami Heat for Game 3 of the NBA Finals this week by singing the “Star-Spangled Banner.” Unfortunately, there were people at home hiding behind their Twitter account names hurling racist remarks. The Mexican-American singer responded on Twitter, asking people not to pay attention to the negative comments.
According to CNN, the negative messages included people calling him an illegal alien. One person wrote, “Why they got a Mexican kid singing the national anthem.” A Tumblr blog posted many more of the comments, slamming anyone suggesting that a boy raised in San Antonio didn’t have the right to sing the National Anthem.
On Wednesday, Sebastien took to Twitter himself to show that he was not shaken by the insults. “Please do not pay attention to the negative people. I am an American living the American Dream,” he wrote. “This is part of the American life.”
He also told CNN, “For those that said something bad about me, I understand it's your opinion...I'm a proud American and live in a free country. It's not hurting me. It's just your opinion.”
“When he was on America's Got Talent, he faced racism there, too. You can't satisfy everyone,” his father, Juan De La Cruz, said. “I think people reacted the way they did because Sebastien was wearing his mariachi outfit. But, it doesn't make sense to listen to those people when most of the feedback we have gotten is positive. San Antonio supports Sebastien.”
