Wong Kar-Wai, the great Hong Kong director behind acclaimed films like Happy Together, Chungking Express and In The Mood For Love, has received France’s top cultural award.
According to The AFP, the award was presented by French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius at the French consul’s home in Hong Kong. The honor makes Wong a Commander of France's Order of Arts and Letters.
The Associated Press notes that Wong considered the award “a tribute to Hong Kong cinema” and called France the “spirit home” of film.
Wong has earned several awards in France, including the Best Director prize at the 1997 Cannes film Festival for Happy Together. In The Mood For Love, which is widely regarded as one of the best films of the past decade, was also a cult hit there. In 2006, he became the first Chinese director to lead the Cannes jury.
Wong’s new film is The Grandmaster, a biopic on famed martial arts expert Ip Man, who trained Bruce Lee. It has already been released in France and is slated for an Aug. 23 release in the U.S.
