If your Netflix instant queue looks a little lighter this morning, its because a giant collection of nearly 1,800 films have disappeared from the subscription service.
Mashable reports that Netflix suddenly lost 1,794 titles since licensing agreements with MGM, Warner Bros. and Universal have expired. The MGM collection that expired included many of the United Artists titles the studio still owns, including the James Bond films.
While the reason why the deal with Warner Bros. expiring has been blamed on Warner Archive Instant, a Warner rep told Slate that this was not the case.
Netflix’s director of global corporate communications, Joris Evers, also issued a statement, saying that they will be adding 500 new titles today and that they typically negotiate on an exclusive basis.
“We are selective about what’s available to watch on Netflix,” Evers said. “We often license TV shows and movies on an exclusive basis, so we can provide a unique experience. We’ll forego, or choose not renew, titles that aren’t watched enough. We always use our knowledge about what our members love to watch to decide what’s available on Netflix. Our goal is to be an expert programmer, offering a mix that delights our members, rather than trying to be a broad distributor.”
Instant Watcher, which tracks the movies available on Netflix, shows that a bunch of other titles expire on May 2.
