Dame Helen Mirren won an Oscar for playing Queen Elizabeth II in The Queen and an Olivier Award for playing her in The Audience. However, her latest performance dressed as the Queen is drawing even more media attention. During a performance of the show, she stormed off the stage to tell a dancing troupe to stop banging their drums.
The incident took place on Saturday, outside the Gielgud theatre in London. According to The Daily Mail, the parade was to promote the As One In The Park event for gay and transgender people. The crowd of around 200 people banged their drums, danced and played instruments, all while Mirren was trying to perform inside.
Mirren managed to finish the entire first part of the play without letting them get to her, but during the intermission, she had to have a word with them. She didn’t change, so she stormed out of the theatre dressed as the Queen. The Sun reports that she told them to “shut the f*** up.” When she returned, she received a standing ovation.
According to a writer for The Telegraph, who attended the show, Mirren jokingly told the audience, “We’re having a bad night.” She then said, “I went outside dressed as the Queen – and told them, not too politely, to ‘go away’ as they were spoiling the play.”
“She said people had paid ‘a lot of f***ing money’ to watch her show and that we were ‘f***ing ruining it,” promoter Joe O’Leary told the Daily Mail. “It was strange to see this little woman in tiara and pearls shouting like that. It’s not the behaviour you’d expect from the Queen.”
The Audience was written by Peter Morgan and won Mirren a Olivier last month.
