5. "Blue Suede Shoes"
Carl Perkins wrote and recorded “Blue Suede Shoes” in 1955. It was certified gold within about four and a half months of its release. RCA convinced Elvis to release a recording of it in 1956, but Elvis would only agree if they held its release until after Perkins’ version had dropped on the charts. Elvis performed the song three times on national television in 1956. The recording was also the first song on his debut studio album, Elvis Presley, released in March 1956. He re-recorded the song in 1960 for his film G.I. Blues. His recording of the song was certified gold in 1999. The video below is of his TV performance on The Milton Berle Show, which was shot live on the USS Hancock, San Diego, California, April 3, 1956.
