Vin Scully (It Takes Two - 1969)
Surprisingly, many sports figures have been game show hosts in the past, as seen in the last list with John McEnroe and Chris Jericho. Once again, a sports figure will be highlighted for previously being a game show host, but though this person is not known for being an athlete, he is certainly known for being a sports icon. For 67 seasons, this man has lent his voice to the game of baseball and is regarded by many as the best sports broadcaster of all-time. Whether they were in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, generations of Dodgers fans listened to this man call game after game with poise and prestige. However, Vin Scully is not only a legendary announcer, is not only a member of the National Radio Hall of Fame and is not only a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Back in 1969, Vin Scully was a game show host and emceed NBC's It Takes Two.
The game involved three celebrity couples answering questions with a numerical value answer. Once Vin posed the question, each individual wrote down what they thought the correct answer was. Each couple's numbers were then averaged together to form their official answer. An audience member then chose which celebrity couple they thought had the value closest to the correct answer to try and win a prize. Years later in 1997, another legendary broadcaster, Dick Clark, hosted a revival of It Takes Two, which lasted the same amount of time as Vin Scully's version did, one season.
If sportscasting didn't work out for Vin Scully, game show hosting could've been his fall back occupation because he was a natural. However, Vin did alright in the sportscasting world. Usually, many people are used to just hearing Vin Scully and his recognizable voice, but watching him was just as enjoyable. He interacted well with the celebrities on stage, he provided classic Vin Scully jokes here and there and was as charming as ever when revealing the answers to the questions and telling an audience player that they had just won a fabulous prize. Plus, seeing Vin Scully's smile was always a treat. It's a shame that It Takes Two didn't last longer than it did because Vin Scully was an absolute delight to watch host the show and definitely should have had another chance to host a game show.
