1. Hair Today, Gone ... in the Same Episode! (Super Password)
As you've previously seen, Password and two of its revivals have had their fair share of blunders, especially when it comes to the celebrity guests or even the host committing the Password cardinal sin. However, out of all of the lip slips that have occurred over the years, the appropriately labeled "Testimony Incident" will always be the most blunderful.
In fact, this clip goes beyond the list of the top 10 game show blunders in television history. Based on the fact that more than one funny moment occurred and based on the hilarity of the situation as a whole, it definitely belongs in a list of the greatest game show moments in television history.
Patty Duke was no stranger to game shows in the '70s and '80s. Aside from Super Password, she appeared many times as a celebrity guest on Password Plus, Match Game, Tattletales and Pyramid and was always considered to be a great game player. However, even the best sometimes have their bad days. There are two different reactions that can occur when a password is mistakenly said. Either the clue giver immediately realizes what they have done, or the funnier reaction of the two, the clue giver has no idea that they messed up even when the audience is laughing and the illegal clue buzzer has sounded. Patty Duke, thankfully for enjoyment purposes, ended up in the second category.
To be fair, "testimony" is a really hard word to both think of a clue for and to guess, but that's not what's important here. What's great about the "Testimony Incident" is that before the real blunder occurs, two other moments give a great lead-in to the main event. First, former host of The $1.98 Beauty Show, Rip Taylor, provides an opening laugh with his really stretched out clue of "Episcopalian." Then, to add onto the laughter, Bert Convy, the host of the show, has no idea where he is in the game. Thinking the contestant is giving an answer to the puzzle, Bert asks a couple of times if "clergyman" is correct, but soon realizes that he has once again made a fool of himself on the Super Password stage. What made Bert Convy a great game show host was that, even if he messed up, he always knew how to make light of the situation and never had a problem with laughing at his own mistakes, as shown with blunder number four.
Now to the big blunder. What's funny is that Patty Duke gave a decent clue for the word "testimony" to her partner, but Bert Convy decided that it wasn't time to give up the comedy that was ensuing. When the dust finally settled after a stool throw, more laughing and a quip by Mr. Taylor, Patty was able to give a clue that everyone could hear. The only problem now was that Patty gave the "perfect clue." The look on Patty's face as she said "testimony" combined with the confused look on the contestant's face made for a priceless moment!
Oh yeah, then there was Rip Taylor throwing Bert's stool down, followed by him taking off his famous toupee and Bert Convy using the toupee as chest hair. What more can you ask for in one game show clip!
This blunder can sure get you giggling every time it's viewed. Just Patty Duke saying "testimony" can have you break out in laughter, but add on all the moments before and after and you have five minutes of game show magic. For all the right reasons, the "Testimony Innocent" is absolutely, positively the number one game show blunder in television history. It's going to take something really hilarious to ever knock this clip out of the top spot.
