1. "Hey, Soul Sister"
It's the song that put Train back on the map after a nearly three-year hiatus, and in the music industry, there's nothing that says welcome back better than a song that gets certified platinum six times.
"Hey, Soul Sister" deserves to be the number one ranked song just by its musical achievements. It was one of the top-selling songs of 2010, is Train's highest ranked career song on the Billboard Hot 100 chart at number three, and most importantly, earned the band a Grammy Award in 2011 for Best Pop Duo or Group.
Statistics and awards aren't always everything, but "Hey, Soul Sister" has everything you want in a song, from a catchy melody to lyrics that speak to any generation. Whether you're eight or 88, as soon as you hear the ukulele opening and Pat Monahan singing the word "hey," it's an invitation to enjoy three and a half minutes of pure musical enjoyment.
Speaking of generations, what's fun about some of the "Hey, Soul Sister" lyrics is that there are 80s references within. From the chorus line "ain't that mister mister," to the simile "Like a Virgin, you're Madonna," and every game show fan's favorite lyric, "a game show Love Connection." What a better way to learn about the band famous for the song "Broken Wings" or everyone's favorite Material Girl or the show Chuck Woolery said "two and two" on than by listening to Train.
"Hey, Soul Sister" has only been on the radio for nine years, but this is a song that can be just as popular in year 39 and can definitely be viewed as an American classic in years to come.
"Play That Song" was a good contender, "Drive By" came close, "Drops of Jupiter" almost overtook it, but on every level, "Hey, Soul Sister" is the number one Train song as of now.
