2. "Drops of Jupiter"
If one song can define the success and credibility of Train as a band and as music makers, "Drops of Jupiter" is that song. Without a doubt, "Drops of Jupiter" is Train's signature song, even if it may be number two on this list and not the top spot. When you hear those opening piano notes, a chill forms in the air because you know Pat Monahan is going to take you on a journey through the lyrics and his pitch-perfect voice. There is just something special that comes about every time "Drops of Jupiter" is played.
Although this song was off the band's second album, and their first album had success with the track "Meet Virginia," "Drops of Jupiter" was the song that put Train on the map and catapulted their success into the stratosphere. The song peaked at number five on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, earned Train five Grammy nominations in 2001 and won them two Grammy's, Best Rock Song and Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalists.
"Drops of Jupiter" is an all-around great song that combines some of the greatest songwriting and music writing. It's still a wonder where the line "the best soy latte that you ever had in me" came from, but we've come to expect quirky lines like those in Train songs over the years. 17 years after the song was first released, every time Pat Monahan sings this song, whether it be at a concert or on television, it still sounds fresh and current, which is hard to do with a lot of songs.
Just because "Drops of Jupiter" didn't rank number one on this list doesn't mean it can't rank number one of your list, and for many Train fans, this song probably does.
