Tony nominated musicals: Winning isn't everything

West Side Story (1958)

This production played 732 performances opening in 1957 and closed in 1959. The story follows young lovers Tony and Maria, who are not able to be together, but they dramatically end up together. This musical definitely has star-crossed moments reminiscent of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.

The Music Man was the Best Musical winner in 1958.
