'Survivor' - greatest theme-based seasons as of now

5. Survivor: Cagayan - Brawn vs. Brains vs. Beauty (Season 28 - 2014)

We have made it to the top five, a position that all Survivor players hope to make it to and all Survivor seasons hope to be ranked within. The number five theme-based season (as of now) goes to the season that immediately followed Blood vs Water, and that is season 28, Survivor: Cagayan - Brawn vs. Brains vs. Beauty.

Just like the previous season, the teaser involved a roughly ten-second clip being shown to the viewers and the goal was to have the fans tweet ideas of what it might mean. The viewers were shown the letter B and a quick snippet from the "Sumo at Sea" challenge used during Heroes vs. Villains. Then came another B with a snippet of a puzzle, and finally, a third B with an attractive girl coming out of the water.

At the end of the show, as it was done for the Blood vs. Water reveal, the teaser was shown to the viewers again, only this time with the season logo. It was revealed the season would revolve around the classic match-up of Brawn and Brains, plus add in a third category, Beauty.

As expected, the castaways were divided into three tribes based on the attribute that is most associated with their profession and home lifestyle. The brawn tribe consists of people who rely on their physical strength and their endurance to succeed. The brains tribe consists of those who use their intelligence and smarts to advance themselves. The beauty tribe contests of individuals who often times rely on their good looks to get ahead.

Not only is brawn vs. brains vs. beauty an interesting division of people in the real world, it is the perfect tribal division for the game of Survivor because these are the three qualities that embody Survivor players, any which one, or a combination of two or even all three, can help a castaway win.

Castaways in the past have won the game using each of these qualities to their advantage. Players like Tom of Survivor: Palau and Kim from Survivor: One World used their dominance in challenges as the main force. Players like Yul from Survivor: Cook Islands and Todd from Survivor: China relied on their smarts to advance to the end and, ultimately, win. Players like Jenna from Survivor: The Amazon and Natalie from Survivor: Samoa, some might say, coasted by with their good looks, and in the end, took home the million dollar check.

Dividing the tribes up by brawn, brains and beauty is probably the most unique and significant tribe division in the show's history. Thankfully, the season as a whole is one of the show's best, introducing memorable characters like Tony, Kass, Woo and Spencer, and re-introducing the immunity idol that can be played after the votes have been read.

The main problem with the season was, just like with almost all of the season themes based on tribal divisions, the production team did not let the tribes play out long enough. By episode five, the whole concept of brawn vs. brains vs. beauty was thrown out the window when a tribe swap occurred and mixed the three groups up. Sure, it technically still is a season that is pitting the three qualities against each other, but without the official tribal division, the 'vs.' aspect in brawn vs. brains vs. beauty is eliminated.

On a list ranking the top-ten best seasons of all-time, Survivor: Cagayan - Brawn vs. Brains vs. Beauty might be ranked in the top three by fans, but based on theme alone, it lands in them number five spot.
