3. The "50 States Project" started as a joke.

Sufjan released Michigan in 2003, claiming that he was going to release 50 albums inspired by the 50 states. In 2005, he released Illinois then admitting that the project was a joke and he never had the intentions to complete it. Even though it was a "joke," Illinois received critical praise, being named Best Album of 2005 by multiple publications. It eventually became the highest rated album of 2005 on Metacritic.
