5. Nineteen Eighty-Four (1984)

In the film adaptation of George Orwell’s book, 1984, Hurt plays the hero, Winston Smith, who tries to evade, but is eventually captured by the Thought Police. Hurt’s performance led film critic Roger Ebert to call him “the perfect Winston Smith."
