4. Creating “The Fonz”
Sitcoms often rely on stereotypes to get the ball rolling. Hiring Henry Winkler as Arthur “The Fonz” Fonzarelli was brilliant. There was a little magical realism in the character. He could turn on lights or a juke box with a strategic hit and he could get girls with a snap of his fingers.
However, this character was more than a guy from the wrong side of the tracks. His relationships with the Cunningham family, specifically with son Richie (Ron Howard) and mom Marion (Marion Ross) were especially touching and quite nuanced for a guy with a rough past.
