10 contributions to TV and film from Garry Marshall

6.  The perfection of the chick flick

Whether or not the term is PC these days, chick flicks was a popular term for a genre of film. The female version of the buddy film might be sentimental and require an extra box of tissues, but his takes were not unrealistic.  Barbara Hershey and Bette Midler played believable lifelong friends in Beaches and perhaps it may have encouraged some unlikely friendships to flourish in real life.  Maybe people even tried to value pen pals—at least until email, IM and texting took over. Also, finding a young Mayim Bialik to play young Midler was a stroke of genius.  Again, go casting directors Mike Fenton, Judy Taylor and Lynda Gordon.
