The character Ben Mendelsohn plays is also a mystery, but could it possibly be Grand Moff Tarkin? Tarkin was such a significant part of A New Hope that it would almost be odd not to include him in this film. Plus, one of the first books Disney ever produced as part of the new canon focused entirely around Tarkin, perhaps because they knew he would make his return to the big screen very soon. But actually, based on the clothing Mendelsohn is wearing, it seems that his character is a Grand Admiral rather than a Grand Moff. Could this be Grand Admiral Thrawn, the character from Timothy Zahn's Thrawn trilogy? He's a fan favorite, and Star Wars has already started to re-canonize elements of the old Expanded Universe like Malachor in Rebels, so this could be the perfect chance to make Thrawn canon again.
