8. “Yesterday”
In 1965, the Beatles were putting together their HELP! album when Paul McCartney suggested he record “Yesterday” as a solo, with no backing at all. Martin came up with the idea of backing Paul with a string quartet and that really catapulted the song, which has since become a standard. This also began Paul’s interest in using strings on his songs and he would frequently call on Martin to collaborate.
