The Hurt Locker, 2009
The Hurt Locker remains the only Best Picture winner to be directed by a woman, Kathryn Bigelow, who is also the only woman to win Best Director. Strip away the Iraq War angle and the film reveals itself to be one of the most tense, thrilling movies to win Best Picture. This is the little movie that made sure James Cameron’s Avatar didn’t win and it actually deserved it. Sure, it might not be an accurate portrayal of war in Iraq, but it’s an entertaining fictional movie.
