Steve McQueen’s 12 Years A Slave could have been a movie made for the sole purpose of winning an award. Yet, the filmmaker - who was a video artist before turning to feature films with 2008’s Hunger - does not allow the movie to become a boring history lesson. Instead, McQueen focuses on the human element of slavery and a man who was never supposed to be a slave. McQueen presents slavery through Solomon Northup’s eyes without straying too far from the reality that he was just one in millions. It is not easy to watch, but 12 Years A Slave stays with you and that’s a power that only the best films have.
