These last two could be decided by a coin flip. By 2007, Joel and Ethan Coen had already cemented their status as one of the best working American filmmakers and No Country For Old Men seemed like the ultimate culmination of their talent. Everything works. The performances are unforgettable and Javier Bardem’s Chigurh is the scariest character in a Best Picture winner not named Hannibal Lecter.
It’s rather fascinating that this movie won, despite being influenced by so many Western filmmakers whose movies were not appreciated by the Academy. Sam Peckinpah is alive somewhere in the heart of No Country For Old Men.
