5. The Patriot
The Patriot, (directed by Roland Emmerich), was released in 2000 and featured Mel Gibson as a farmer back in the days of the American Revolution. He is driven to become a part of the Colonial Militia after a British officer murders his own son. This role showed off Gibson's ability to transform into roles and take on period pieces. The Patriot also featured an up and coming Heath Ledger at the time.
