Top 10 horror films of 2015

4. Unfriended

In such a formulaic genre, it’s always refreshing to see a film that literally could not have existed 10 years ago. That’s the case with Unfriended, the new movie which takes place entirely over a Skype call and uses our familiarity with computers against us. There’s a great sequence in the movie that demonstrates quite well why it's so unique: one of the participants’ video suddenly freezes, and anyone who has ever used Skype instantly assumes there’s an issue with the connection going on. But then suddenly, an object in the frame begins to move, and we realize the call isn’t frozen: instead, there is something deeply wrong with this girl, who has totally stopped moving on her own without any Internet problems interfering. Unfriended is chock full of innovative tricks like that, and many of its scares are ingenious tricks that we have never seen on film before. Who would have thought we’d get a movie that uses music playlists to scare us? It’s too bad that the ending is a complete joke, though. The filmmakers had the opportunity to leave us off on a dark and subdued note, but instead they opted for generic monster movie material. Thankfully, that's not enough to ruin what came before, an effective little story that’s far smarter and more fun that you might expect from an admittedly silly premise.
