5. Goodnight Mommy
Goodnight Mommy is a hard movie to recommend. On the one hand, it’s an undeniably well crafted film with an intriguing mystery, three dimensional characters and tension that makes the experience physically painful to watch. On the other hand, it is so unpleasant that the experience of seeing it is not remotely enjoyable. When the credits begin, we let out a sigh of relief that this horrible journey has finally ended and it takes a few days for the effect to wear off. Though it’s not the most violent or the darkest horror film of 2015, it is by far the most messed up to contemplate the implications of. Part of the reason it works so well is that Goodnight Mommy totally flips our expectations on their head unlike any film out there, beginning as one thing and ending in a completely different place. It's one of the greatest horror films of the year, but it's so good that you probably should not watch it. And if you do, there's almost no way you'll find yourself watching it a second time.
