8. We Are Still Here
A cool throwback to old school horror, We Are Still Here is a classic ghost story that doesn’t offer a whole lot new but that still accomplishes exactly what it sets out to accomplish. Ted Geoghegan nails the atmosphere most of all, and the imagery of this snowy New England environment is gorgeous and sends chills down the spine. It's a rare horror film that chooses to hold back whenever possible, putting emphasis on the mystery and the slow build over anything else. That mystery is one that keeps us guessing, although some lingering plot holes do arise by the denouement. The look of the villains is unique, and Geoghegan contrasts fire and ice in an interesting way. Like The Conjuring, We Are Still Here doesn’t do much that we haven’t seen before, but it’s a nice greatest hits compilation of some of the best of ‘70s horror.
