9. The Visit
M. Night Shyamalan's first halfway decent film in years, The Visit is something of a magic trick. The movie makes excellent use of misdirection and intentionally misleads the audience at every possible turn and it all ramps up to an all time classic Shyamalan reveal that is brilliant in its simplicity. The Visit is also notable for its efficiency, as despite following the found footage formula, it isn’t packed with useless filler scenes that too often populate this subgenre. Even all of the early conversations, which seem useless at the time, end up paying off, whereas in a typical found footage film, the entire first 20 minutes is just a giant waste of time. While not as scary as it could have been, The Visit is full of the general creepiness that comes with seemingly normal people acting inexplicably bizarre, and Shyamalan creates an uneasy tone that constantly makes us laugh in discomfort. There’s plenty of awkward dialogue between the kids, and Shyamalan's repeated attempts at humor are more cringeworthy than funny, but it’s still a film worth watching at least once if only for that killer third act.
