1. It Follows
It Follows isn’t just the best horror movie of the year; it’s one of 2015’s best films, period. Like many of the genre’s greatest entries, it works both on a literal and a metaphorical level, functioning as a horrifying tale of an invisible monster and as a story about paranoia, trust, and desperately trying to move on from a traumatic experience. It’s rare to say that the cinematography is the reason to see a horror film, but that’s the case here, and Mike Giolakis has done a spectacular job crafting among the most visually compelling movies in recent months. Every frame feels meticulously composed, and David Robert Mitchell says far more without words than with them. In most horror stories featuring a gang of teenagers, a recommendation generally comes with the caveat that all of the acting is terrible and you’ll be rooting for the kids to die. That’s not the case here; the dynamic between these young characters is pitch perfect, the performances are fantastic, and we actually enjoy hanging out with all of them. This is both an emotionally resonant story and one of the scariest movies of the decade, one that sticks with you days later and forces you to question how much you can really trust anyone. Mitchell also deserves a lot of credit for actually leaving us off on a final scene that feels thematically appropriate rather than tapping into the “one final scare” cliche. It Follows is a near-perfect horror movie that only improves upon rewatch and it shouldn’t be long before it is ranked alongside some of the all time classics.
