Top 10 horror films of 2015

2. Krampus

After making Halloween more fun than ever with Trick ‘r Treat, Michael Dougherty is back with Krampus, this time applying the same treatment to Christmas. Like an even more screwed up version of A Christmas Carol, Krampus takes us to some twisted places but in service of a sweet message. Some have called it slow moving, as it does take some time before anything remotely scary happens, but the result is a group of well developed characters and not simple one note stereotypes. We can instantly relate to this family of totally varied people who just happen to share blood, and when things take a turn for the worse, it's made all the more interesting because Dougherty has made us feel like we’re a part of this group. That comradery makes even scenes where not much is happening as enjoyable to watch as any of the horror set pieces. Once we get to what we came for, despite the movie being PG-13, it doesn’t disappoint, as there are so many incredible costumes and practical effects that will inevitably inspire fan art and Halloween costumes for years to come. The vague ending will frustrate some, but how awesome is it to have a horror film that spawns so much discussion afterwards and isn't instantly forgettable? While not without its flaws - it isn’t nearly as funny as it wants to be - Krampus is surely one of the better holiday horror movies we’ve seen, and one that you’ll want to revisit every Christmas for years to come. Creating new holiday traditions appears to be Dougherty's specialty.
