Sicario, Denis Villeneuve
Running a lean two hours, Sicario is a tense thriller that works really hard to surprise you with twists. While some of them are predictable - clearly, something is up with Benicio Del Toro - they are pulled off so effortlessly that you can forgive it. The cinematography is also astounding, coming from Roger Deakins, who needs an Oscar as soon as possible.
But I think the key with Sicario is the unexpected performance from Emily Blunt. She has to carry the whole movie as the audience surrogate, but her character still can’t be completely oblivious to what’s going on. After getting great performances in Prisoners, Denis Villeneuve solidified his ability as an actor’s director with Sicario. (Daniel S Levine)
