The Martian, Ridley Scott
It’s so refreshing to see a science fiction movie like The Martian that trusts in the audience’s intelligence and never feels the need to dumb things down, and rarely do we get the inevitable “explain it to me like I’m a five-year-old” scene. Mark Watney’s sheer enthusiasm and willpower during a situation that would cause any one of us to lose hope is a joy to watch, and it only makes the moments when he does break down in tears that much more affecting. Though the presence of such a large cast arguably deters from any sense of isolation Ridley Scott might aim for, seeing the NASA team come together and figure things out is incredibly entertaining, and thankfully, the film doesn’t really have a clear villain. In a more generic movie, there would be some greedy, mustache twirling boss who explicitly doesn’t care about Mark’s life, but even the character who is ostensibly an antagonist is just doing what he believes is right.
Despite so clearly not being a comedy as the Golden Globes classifies it, the movie still peppers in enough laughs to keep things light but not detract from the dire situation. The Martian is a thrilling, fast-paced and crowd pleasing journey about the power of science, a positive attitude, and, of course, potatoes. (Brendan Morrow)
