Mad Max: Fury Road, George Miller
2015 was a remarkable year for action movies, but only one delivered something we truly have never seen before and potentially never will again: the high-octane post apocalyptic masterpiece Mad Max: Fury Road. In an age when so many filmmakers go full George Lucas and craft all of their special effects inside a computer, for this movie, 70-year-old George Miller grabbed his crew, went out into the desert, and pulled off some of the most mind-boggling stunts ever put to film.
Computer effects in Fury Road are used to enhance but not replace practical effects, and the sense of danger we feel when watching a stunt person legitimately put themselves in harm’s way cannot be matched by green screen technology. It isn’t just a bunch of explosions, though: Miller’s world building is genuinely interesting throughout, Charlize Theron delivers one of the most memorable action film characters of all time with Imperator Furiosa, and overall the story is the kickass feminist action tale we didn’t know we needed. Fury Road is the most rewatchable movie of the past 12 months, and certainly the year’s most impressive achievement. (Brendan Morrow)
