Inside Out, Pete Docter
After several films in a row that weren’t quite up to the standards we expect from Pixar, Inside Out is as emotional and complex a film as the studio has released to date. Part of the Pixar magic has always been exploring the rules of a wildly creative universe, and Pete Docter’s film accomplishes that in spades with a delightfully unique society all functioning inside the mind of a young girl, and it’s hard not to appreciate the sheer ingenuity of a Hollywood studio that creates dreams or a “train of thought” where facts and opinions become jumbled up.
Rising above that, Inside Out is also the most thematically compelling work in Pixar’s catalogue, a kid’s movie which posits that sadness is just as important to our wellbeing as happiness. Too many children’s movies are nothing but smiles, but Pixar trusts that we’ll follow allow with a relatively melancholic experience that ultimately teaches a profound lesson. Far from dumbing itself down for kids, the movie is an equally mature and hilarious animated adventure. When we all look back at Pixar’s contributions to cinema decades from now, Inside Out will spring to mind as often as that Tripledent Gum commercial. (Brendan Morrow)
