Brooklyn, John Crowley
Based on Colm Toibin’s novel, Brooklyn could have been a boring, made-for-TV romance. Instead, the film is a wonderful tribute to immigrants who came to this country in search of the hope and happiness they couldn’t find at home. Saoirse Ronan is simply a revelation as Ellis and carries the film like a seasoned veteran.
For me, the film struck the perfect chords not just because it’s hard not to have my own family’s immigrant story in mind, but also because it just felt like a movie made the way they used to make serious romantic films. Crowley embraces the Old Hollywood DNA embedded in the story. He’s not afraid to have you in tears at the very end. (Daniel S Levine)
