Spotlight, Tom McCarthy
Actor-turned-filmmaker Tom McCarthy has been a force in the indie filmmaking community for years now, but it wasn’t until Spotlight that he really announced himself as someone Hollywood can’t ignore. A journalism film that rivals All The President’s Men, Spotlight is an incredible film about the difficulties of investigative journalism work. Getting the news to the people - and getting it right - is hard and Spotlight doesn’t shy from that.
Michael Keaton, Rachel McAdams and especially Mark Ruffalo all give perfect performances as members of the Boston Globe’s Spotlight team that investigated the Catholic Church sex abuse scandal. But what makes the film really good is that it never paints anyone as a hero. These journalists aren’t knights in shining armor coming to save the day, since they could have - and should have - done so much sooner. (Daniel S Levine)
