3. Jaimie Alexander, Blindspot
I was hesitant to include Alexander on this list because she's been in the business since 2004 and one of her acting credits is a role in the blockbuster Thor franchise — she plays Thor's Asgard warrior friend (slash love interest?) Lady Sif. However, this is the first significant project in which Alexander is the true star and NBC's Blindspot was one of the few statistical hits of the fall season.
On Blindspot, Alexander portrays the main character, known so far only as Jane Doe, a woman who emerges from an abandoned bag in NYC's Time Square with her body covered in tattoos and her mind wiped clean of any memories. Alexander wonderfully executes Jane's toughness and Navy Seal-level fighting skills — proving, as she does in Thor, that Alexander herself is a total bad*** — as well as executing Jane's emotional vulnerability. Given that Jane doesn't understand who she is or what's happened to her, her fire and strength is limited by how lost and confused she inevitably feels, and Alexander portrays this emotional depth with ease.
Where else you may have seen her: As Jessi on ABC Family's Kyle XY from 2007-09, in the MyNetworkTV show Watch Over Me (2006-07), Nurse Jackie (2011), in the 2013 films The Last Stand and Savannah, and in a recurring role in HBO's The Brink (2015).
What's next: Blindspot has already been given a second season, and Alexander is set to appear in two upcoming films Broken Vows and London Fields, as well as the next installment of the Thor franchise, Thor: Ragnarok, due in 2017.
