4. Melissa Benoist, Supergirl

Going into the fall television season, there was no one bound to be more scrutinized on how she played her role than the person tapped to play the title character of CBS's much-anticipated Supergirl. That's a lot of pressure for the chosen actress, Melissa Benoist, who previously only had a few prior acting credits, most notably her role in Glee, as the sweet and talented Marley Rose (2012-14).
Benoist charmed critics even before the show debuted and ever since, the fan reaction has been favorable as well. With her energetic performance, she nails Supergirl/Kara Danvers' plucky, optimistic do-gooder spirit and manages to find the perfect balance between Kara's strength and passion with her tendency to waiver in her confidence under the weight of the responsibility she's taken on and her own personal insecurities. The show has been a hit with some criticism, particularly in its execution of the not-so-subtle feminist message, but Benoist has been a solid bright spot and might be heroic enough to keep the show rolling.
Where else you may have seen her: The films Whiplash (2014) and The Longest Ride (2015)
What's next: The 2016 film Low Riders and the film Billy Boy, for which a release date is not yet released
