This past year, the subject of women in the entertainment business was bigger than ever. Many people, from A-list movie directors and actors to television powerhouses, have been calling for more female leads. To some extent, their prayers were answered this year, particularly in TV, as shows with female leads appeared all over different networks. One of these new leads is Priyanka Chopra. She's easily proven that a show centered around a woman could work — at least if the woman is as talented as herself.
Chopra, an India-born actress, portrays Alex Parrish, a you
ng woman who enters the famous FBI training program, only to wind up a suspect in a terrorist attack not long after graduating. The show flip flops between Parrish's time training at Quantico, where she develops romantic and friendly relationships with her fellow trainees, and the time period after the bomb goes off and she must fight to prove her innocence and find out who the real perpetrator is.
Parrish is the Quantico gem, but she's humble and has some baggage. Parrish gives a nuanced performance playing a character that is strong, yet vulnerable — tormented by her past mistakes and uncertainties — confident, yet modest, sexy, yet independent. She switches from one side of this personality coin to the next with ease through subtle, skillful adjustments in her voice and facial expressions. What's more, she is a flat-out likable star; Parrish can sometimes be hard to swallow because her constant do-gooder efforts occasionally get overbearing, but no matter what, thanks largely to Chopra's charisma, it's hard to ever really take issue with the character.
Where else you may have seen her: Chopra first made a name for herself when she won the Miss World 2000 Pageant as Miss India. She then landed roles in a plethora of films in India.
What's next: Although Quantico hasn't officially been given a second season, it received a full-season order and has held solid ratings. It's a safe bet that Quantico, or at least Chopra herself, isn't going anywhere soon.
