The Apu Trilogy, Criterion
I probably could put only Criterion releases on this list. Even though I didn’t, I still have to give the label the top spot for possibly the most important home video release in recent memory. Satyajit Ray’s The Apu Trilogy is India’s most important contribution to world cinema and no good copies of the three films had ever been available in the U.S. before. Some might balk at it because the three films are in Bengali, but please, I beg you not to. These are three truly fantastic films that explore growing up through the eyes of one boy, who becomes a man before our eyes. Everyone really needs to experience these films. I can’t say that enough.
Another Criterion release I’d like to point out is their release of Harold Lloyd’s Speedy, which just came out this month. In addition to the fantastic film, the supplements are really nifty, with a look at Babe Ruth footage and a look back of what New York City was like in 1928.
