Box office: Chris Hemsworth’s ‘In The Heart of the Sea’ encounters rough seas on Thursday

Ron Howard’s In the Heart of the Sea has just one weekend to make money before it completely sinks behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Unfortunately, the film is already failing to attract audiences.

The Warner Bros./Village Roadshow production only grossed $575,000 on Thursday night, reports Deadline. It is only expected to make $10 million to $12 million over the weekend, which might be just enough to break The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2’s winning streak.

Still, a meager opening like that for a movie that reportedly cost over $110 million to make is a big disappointment for Warner Bros. The studio really doesn’t need another big flop like this, especially after a difficult summer and the Pan bomb.

According to Box Office Mojo, In the Heart of the Sea is being released in just over 3,100 theaters. It is also being released in IMAX and 3D.

Mockingjay 2 is expected to make around $10 million in its fourth weekend, while The Good Dinosaur, Creed and Krampus will round out the top five.

The only other important release of the weekend is Adam McKay’s ensemble drama The Big Short, which stars Steve Carell, Christian Bale, Brad Pitt and Ryan Gosling. It is only being released in eight theaters this weekend before it goes wide on Dec. 23.
