Box office: Chris Hemsworth’s ‘In The Heart of the Sea’ drowns, ‘Mockingjay 2’ wins

Warner Bros.’ awful 2015 continued this weekend with a dreadful opening for the big-budget sea epic In The Heart of the Sea. The latest film from Ron Howard proved that Chris Hemsworth still can’t bring audiences to theaters when he’s not playing Thor.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 held on for a fourth consecutive weekend with just $11.3 million. That brought its domestic total to $244.5 million. The Lionsgate film also continued dominating the field overseas, and has earned $564.6 million worldwide.

Heart of the Sea mustered just $11 million. It reportedly cost over $100 million to make. However, it was clearly targeted towards an adult audience, one that actually reads reviews and those reviews were bad. Warner Bros. had hoped to release the film in March originally, but post-production delayed it and someone in their offices thought it had a chance at the Oscars. That was a big miscalculation on their part, as it earned zero nominations from the Golden Globes.

Thanks in part to audiences staying away from the Hemsworth movie and preparing for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, this was one of the worst weekends in over a decade. According to Box Office Mojo, the Top 12 only grossed a combined $68.7 million, which is the worst result for this weekend of the year since 1998.

The rest of the Top 5 includes The Good Dinosaur, which made $10.4 million and brought its domestic total to $89.6 million; Creed, which added $10.1 million and raised its total to $79.3 million; and Krampus, which added $8 million. Krampus’ two-week total is now $28.1 million.

There was one interesting limited opening this weekend. The Big Short, starring Steve Carell, Brad Pitt, Christian Bale and Ryan Gosling, grossed $720,000 from just eight theaters. It goes wide on Dec. 23.
