Bill Cosby charged for sexual assault by Pennsylvania DA

Over a year after women began coming forward with stories of being sexually assaulted and drugged by comedian Bill Cosby, the once beloved sitcom star is finally facing criminal charges.

Sources first told the Associated Press that Montgomery County, Pennsylvania prosecutors will charge Cosby for the alleged sexual assault of Andrea Constand, the former Temple University employee who said that she was drugged and raped at Cosby’s home in 2004. The DA later formally announced the charges in a press conference and said that Constand, who was not named, will cooperate.

DA Kevin R. Steele said that Cosby will face one charge, aggravated indecent assault. It’s the one charge he can face right now under the statute of limitations. The arraignment is expected to be later today.

This will be the first criminal charges Cosby will face since over 40 women have come forward with claims that Cosby sexually assaulted and drugged them over several decades.

Constand and Cosby did settle a civil lawsuit in 2005, although the previous Montgomery County DA decided not to charge Cosby. In July, portions of Cosby’s deposition were made public and it appeared that he outlined how he seduced young women.

Cosby, 78, was best known for the sitcom The Cosby Show and had denied all allegations over the past year. He even continued his standup tour and was often met with protests.
