There might be more tension on the set of The Muppets than anticipated. Not only are Miss Piggy and Kermit The Frog not together, but the show is losing its showrunner.
Co-creator Bob Kushell, who co-wrote the presentation that sold the idea of a new Muppets show for ABC, is leaving his role as showrunner. Sources for The Hollywood Reporter say that he didn’t agree with where co-creator Bill Prady (The Big Bang Theory) wanted to take the show.
Both THR and Deadline report that Kristin Newman, who worked on ABC’s Galavant, as well as That ‘70s Show and How I Met Your Mother, is in talks to replace Kushell. However, that deal hasn’t been closed.
This shift comes just after ABC put in a strange full-season order for The Muppets, only adding three more episodes to bring its first season to 16 episodes. That's six episodes shy of a typical broadcast TV season. It seemed likely that ABC’s short order came because it has an overload of extra shows for midseason.
Deadline reports that ABC will put The Muppets on hiatus after episode 10. The last six episodes would have a different direction for the show and will not air until after midseason.
The Muppets has struggled with audiences since it debuted and fans are still undecided about the show’s new take on the classic Jim Henson characters. The series has tried to take an edgier look at the characters, as they run Up Late With Miss Piggy.
