‘Star Wars’ fan who sparked #ForceForDaniel campaign dies days after seeing ‘Force Awakens’

Daniel Fleetwood, the terminally ill Star Wars fan who inspired the #ForceForDaniel social media campaign, has died. His death came just days after he was provided a copy of The Force Awakens.

Last week, Daniel’s story went viral when he told Click2Houston that his dying wish was to see The Force Awakens now because he didn’t think he would live to Dec. 18. He suffered from spindle cell sarcoma, a rare connective tissue cancer.

Daniel’s story inspired thousands to go to Twitter and Facebook with the hashtag #ForceForDaniel and called on Lucasfilm and Disney to allow Daniel to see the movie early. Members of the Star Wars family, including actors Mark Hamill and John Boyega, showed their support.

Then on Thursday, Daniel’s wife Ashley revealed that director J.J. Abrams personally called her husband and allowed them to see an unedited version of the film.

Sadly, Ashley revealed overnight that Daniel succumbed to his cancer.

“Daniel put up an amazing fight to the very end,” Ashley wrote. “He is now one with God and with the force. He passed in his sleep and in peace. He will always be my idol and my hero. Please hug uncle Marc for me and give Lucy lots of kisses. Rest in peace my love. This was the last selfie we ever took together.‪#‎forcefordaniel‬.”
