Shonda Rhimes to receive Producers Guild’s Norman Lear Achievement Award

Prolific television producer Shonda Rhimes will receive a new honor to celebrate her two decades in television. The Producers Guild of America announced today that she will be the recipient of the 2016 Norman Lear Achievement Award in Television.

Rhimes is one of the most popular TV creators working today and has become a household name through her work on ABC. She has a whole night to herself, with Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal and How To Get Away With Murder all airing on Thursdays. She created Grey’s Anatomy, which is now in its 12th season, and Scandal, which is in its fifth. She is an executive producer on HTGAWM, which is now in season two.

Rhimes also created Private Practice, a Grey’s spinoff, which ran on ABC from 2007 to 2013.

“To be the recipient of an award bestowed upon me by my peers in the PGA is truly an honor,” Rhimes said in a statement to Variety. “The fact that the award is named after a legendary producer whose work has had such an inspiring effect on my growth as a writer is genuinely gratifying. I couldn’t be more grateful for this special recognition.”

Rhimes will pick up the award at the PGA awards on Jan. 23 in Los Angeles. Last year’s Norman Lear Award recipient was Mark Gordon. Other winners include J.J. Abrams, Dick Wolf, Lorne Michaels and Chuck Lorre.
