‘Sesame Street’ starts on HBO in January with 30-minute episodes

HBO and Sesame Workshop finally announced the premiere date for the 46th season of Sesame Street. It will be the first time ever that episodes of the iconic series will not debut on PBS first.

Sesame Street will start its new season on Saturday, Jan. 16 at 9 a.m. with two brand new episodes. The show will feature brand new opening and closing songs, as well as a new star, Nina. There will also be a new segment called “Smart Cookies,” featuring Cookie Monster, and each episode will only run a half hour.

HBO will also air a Spanish-dubbed version on HBO Latino. New episodes and old episodes will air on HBO Family every day at 8 a.m. The last five years of Sesame Street will also be available on HBO NOW and HBO Go.

The drastic and surprising move to a premium cable channel was announced in August. The deal means that new episodes won’t air on PBS until next fall. However, the new deal does give Sesame Street a wider reach.

“Families will see fun and fresh changes to Sesame Street and can depend on their favorite Muppet friends to provide them with engaging and educational content,” Brown Johnson, EVP and creative director at Sesame Workshop, said today. “We’re excited to bring the timeless lessons of Sesame Street to HBO viewers, like learning numbers from The Count, inner strength from Elmo and kindness from Abby.”

Special guest stars for the first Season 46 episodes include Gwen Stefani, Pharrell Williams, Nick Jonas, Fifth Harmony, Sara Bareilles, Alan Cumming, Ne-Yo, Aloe Blacc, Tracee Ellis Ross and Gina Rodriguez.
