France has moved swiftly to retaliate after the Islamic State, also known as ISIS or ISIL, attacked on Friday night. The French military bombed several targets in ISIS-controlled territory in Syria and also conducted 150 raids across France.
The attacks, which took place at several locations around the French capital, left at least 129 people dead and hundreds more injured. French President Francois Hollande called it an “act of war” from ISIS, which has taken responsibility for the attacks.
On Sunday, the French Defense Ministry confirmed that 10 aircraft dropped 20 bombs on ISIS buildings in Raqqa, which is the group’s capital. Opposition activists told The Washington Post that the attacks did leave the city without power.
The bombings were coordinated with U.S. defense officials.
CNN is reporting that French and Belgian authorities have started raids in an effort to capture the suspect Salah Abdeslam, who was born in Belgium and is a French citizen. Police haven’t said why they think the 26-year-old is linked to the attacks, although Le Monde reported that he rented one of the cars that was found outside the Bataclan theater, where 89 people were killed.
Meanwhile, the hacktivist group Anonymous released a video Saturday, threatening ISIS in response to the attacks. According to Time, a man is seen in the video, declaring war against ISIS and speaking French. “We will launch the biggest operation ever against you,” the man in the video said.
