5x05 Dreamcatcher
Just like Rumpelstiltskin spun straw into gold as a way to stay sane, Emma now makes dreamcatchers. She can use them to see into the past, and perhaps the future, although we haven’t seen that yet. In this episode Emma uses a dreamcatcher to see how Merlin was trapped in the tree, thus allowing her to figure out how to free him. She was also able to use one to see Cora murder Daniel (Regina’s first true love). It was in attempt to capture the tear of a lost love, but it wasn’t fresh enough. Regina has Robin to love now. It’s just not the same.
In Storybrooke, the heroes find a dreamcatcher in Dark Swan’s house that shows Violet’s stolen memory of Emma taking her heart and commanding her to break Henry’s. It seems horribly inexcusable, but she did it for that fresh tear of a lost true love. It was what enabled her to set Merlin free, but when Henry saw it, it didn’t matter. All he knew is how betrayed he felt.
I hope that we will see more dreamcatchers and that they will show our heroes what they lost in Camelot: their memories, Emma, and maybe themselves.
Henry’s tear worked. Emma was able to free Merlin, but you can see her emotional battle in the process. Her facial expressions displayed how much she enjoyed the feeling of the power flowing through her.
